Projects 2023
We encourage members to try different kinds of photography and to regularly exercise their skills. One way we do that is to set monthly project themes and invite members to submit photos on each theme. This helps to build confidence, broaden composition techniques and develop creativity.

Members vote online for the submitted photos without knowing who the photographers are. The top three winners are awarded a certificate. The results of the vote are shared with members. If a member wishes to have personal feedback about their photos, the committee will do so on request.
At the end of the year, members vote again for the 12 first-place winners to award the Chairman’s Cup for the best photo of the year.

January: General
A new category for 2023. General means that members can submit up to two images on any subject they wish. No brief, no topic.... any subject (that's legal and/or non-offensive). View gallery February: Low Light
Time to slow down that shutter speed, to get jiggy with your tripod and whip that exposure into submission.... to capture some low light images. Any subject, you choose, as long as it's dark 😁 Atmospheric portraits, light painting, light trails, street scenes, nocturnal wildlife.... wrap up warm, take a small torch and your tripod... and please be careful of trip hazards. View gallery March: People
Whether is candid portraits taken at a distance, casual family photos or posed studio shots... try to capture the personality and character of your subject. View gallery April: Black & White
When is the right time to make a photo black & white? Some say it's when the colour of a photo is a distraction from the main subject. Others say it's when you want to portray an atmosphere of times gone by. You choose the reason for yourself and experiment with a variety of photos taken with the intention of making them black & white. View gallery May: General
2023-05_GeneralA new category for 2023. General means that members can submit up to two images on any subject they wish. No brief, no topic.... any subject (that's legal and/or non-offensive). View gallery June: Depth of Field
Getting control over the Depth of Field in an image is a skill that has to be learnt and practised. It's a balance of distance from the subject, the focal length of the lens, and aperture. From capturing pin sharp details in a macro photo to minimising distracting backgrounds, controlling DoF is a powerful creative tool to use. Submission date: 25 June by 6pm. |
July: Nature
This topic is specifically about wildlife.... not photos of your pets. 😁 Whether you go to a wildlife park, Thatcham Lakes or a boat trip to the Arctic, the location does not matter... try to capture animals doing their thing. Submission date: 23 July by 6pm. August: General
No brief, no topic.... any subject (that's legal and/or non-offensive). Submission date: 27 August by 6pm. September: Travel
A wide category that embraces photos of trains, planes, automobiles and boats as well as the views from your hotel window or toes in the sand. Submission date: 24 September by 6pm. October: Movement
Capturing movement and presenting it in a dramatic photo that engages the viewer is a challenge. It takes practice, a willingness to experiment and a little bit of luck too! Using camera position, lighting, shutter speed, DoF, panning techniques and composition the results can be very rewarding and give a huge sense of achievement. Submission date: 22 October by 6pm. November: Artificial Light
There are many sources of light that can be used in photography.... this is a chance to experiment with as many artificial ones as you can. Anything goes, as long as it's not natural light. Try moving the light or the camera to change how the subject is illuminated. Submission date: 26 November by 6pm. December: General
No brief, no topic.... any subject (that's legal and/or non-offensive). Submission date: 10 January 2024 by 6pm. |
