Eco Friends, a non-profit organisation, invited us to photograph a 'mass unwrap' plastics awareness day at the Co-op in Thatcham as part of the drive towards achieving a plastic free status for the town.
Customers were invited to shop and pay as normal, then unwrap food to put it straight into their bags, boxes or re-useable containers. The plastic was collected up by volunteers and put in empty trollies, to show how much waste is generated in a short space of time. The supermarket took the plastic away afterwards for recycling and disposal.
Mass unwraps like this highlight the scale of avoidable plastic, and puts pressure from communities on to industry to accelerate change.
